Server Cover Letter Example

Most server applications arrive without a letter, so a short one that names the restaurant's service style and states real numbers (covers per shift, section size, check average) immediately separates you from the walk-in stack. General managers hire servers to protect two things, the guest experience and the check average, and your letter should speak to both.

Adapt the example below to the restaurant's style of service, and align it with your server resume example.

La lettera di esempio

Dear Ms. Petrakis,

I'm applying for the server position at Juniper & Vine. I've served for four years, the last two at a 140-seat upscale-casual restaurant where I run a six-table section, turn 45 to 60 covers on a weekend night, and carry a check average about 15% above house baseline.

The lift comes from knowing the menu deeply enough to sell it honestly: I taste every special at lineup, ask the kitchen questions until I can describe a dish without reading it, and passed our wine program's second-level test, which lets me recommend by the bottle rather than defaulting to glasses. I keep allergy protocols tight, ring accurately on Toast, and my last audit period had zero voids from misfires.

Juniper & Vine's rotating regional menu is why I want to work there specifically. A menu that changes every six weeks rewards servers who study, and that's how I like to work.

I'm available for an interview or a trailing shift any day but Tuesday. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Alexis Fontaine

Consigli di scrittura per una lettera di presentazione da Restaurant Server

  • Match the letter to the service style: fine dining, upscale casual, and high-volume family service are different jobs. Naming the restaurant's style shows you know which one you're applying to.
  • Quantify your section and pace: tables run, covers on a peak shift, check average versus house baseline. GMs think in these numbers and will trust a letter that speaks them.
  • Show how you learn a menu (lineup tastings, wine certifications, quizzing the kitchen). Menu fluency is the most direct driver of both tips and check average.
  • Mention accuracy and allergy handling. Voids, misfires, and allergy mistakes cost restaurants real money and real risk, and almost no applicant addresses them.
  • Offer specific availability, including weekends. Open availability is often the tiebreaker between two equally strong servers, so make yours easy to see.
