Zety review: a capable builder with a billing model you should understand first

Updated August 16, 2026 · 7 min read

Zety is a polished resume builder with strong guided writing. The catch is billing: the $1.95 trial auto-renews at $25.95 every four weeks, which is 13 charges per year, and the free plan only exports plain text. Details and sources below.

What Zety is

Zety launched in 2016 and is operated by BOLD LLC, a company headquartered in Puerto Rico that also runs LiveCareer, MyPerfectResume, Resume Now, and Resume.com. That matters for two reasons. First, the products share a lot of technology and templates, so reviews of one BOLD brand often describe the others. Second, they share the same commercial model: a low-cost trial that auto-renews into a recurring subscription billed every four weeks.

The product itself is a step-by-step resume builder. You pick a template, fill in your history section by section, and Zety's wizard suggests pre-written bullet points and phrases matched to your job title. It also includes a resume checker, a cover letter builder, and matching cover letter templates.

What Zety does well

It would be a mistake to dismiss Zety as a product. On usability, it earns its reputation: the guided flow is one of the smoothest in the category, and for someone staring at a blank page, the library of suggested bullet points genuinely lowers the barrier to a first draft.

  • Guided writing. The wizard walks you through each section with role-specific suggested phrases, useful when you do not know where to start.
  • Template control. Fonts, spacing, colors, and section order are all adjustable, with more layout control than most competitors offer.
  • Cover letters included. Matching cover letter templates and a parallel guided flow, so both documents share one look.
  • A large content library. Years of accumulated suggestions across common US job titles.

Zety pricing as of August 2026

Here is the structure that every Zety buyer should understand before entering a card. All figures were checked in August 2026 and can change; Zety displays the exact terms at checkout.

PlanPriceWhat it becomes
Free account$0Build and edit online; download is limited to a plain .txt file with no formatting
14-day trial$1.95Auto-renews at $25.95 every four weeks unless cancelled during the trial
Recurring plan$25.95 per four weeks13 billing cycles per year, about $337 if left running
Annual plan$71.40 billed upfrontWorks out to $5.95 per month over 12 months

The four-week cycle, spelled out

Zety's recurring plan is billed every four weeks, not every calendar month. A year has 52 weeks, so a four-week cycle produces 13 charges per year instead of 12. At $25.95 per cycle that is $337.35 over a year, versus the $311.40 a genuine monthly plan at the same sticker price would cost. The difference is one extra full charge per year, created purely by the cycle length.

This is legal and disclosed in Zety's terms, but it is easy to miss, because most people mentally read a recurring subscription as monthly. When you compare builder prices, compare cost per year, not the sticker number: a $25.95 four-week plan costs more per year than a $27 true monthly plan would.

The other mechanism to understand is the trial conversion. The $1.95 offer is a 14-day window, and the subscription starts automatically when it ends. Nothing dishonest is hidden in the fine print, but the practical effect, documented across thousands of user reviews, is that people who forgot the date discover a $25.95 charge they did not expect.

What users report

On Trustpilot, Zety holds a rating of about 4.2 out of 5 across more than 11,000 reviews as of August 2026. The positive reviews concentrate on the editor, templates, and support agents. The negative reviews concentrate almost entirely on billing: unexpected renewals after the trial, recurring charges the user did not associate with Zety, and friction while cancelling.

Two factual details explain much of the confusion. First, card statements show the charge under the descriptor BLD*ZETY.COM, which people do not always recognize as Zety. Second, on complaint-focused platforms the picture inverts: on PissedConsumer, Zety's rating is about 1.5 out of 5, with unauthorized charges and cancellation difficulties as the dominant themes. Both readings are true at once: satisfied users review the product, unhappy users review the billing.

Templates, exports, and ATS behavior

Zety ships around 18 core templates with variations in color and typography. Most are attractive, and the editor's real strength is that formatting stays consistent while you edit: sections reflow, spacing adjusts, and you never fight a text box the way you would in Word. Paid downloads are available as PDF and .docx, and both keep the layout intact.

On ATS parsing, the honest answer is that it depends on the template, not the brand. Zety's single-column layouts with standard section headings extract cleanly in our tests and in third-party writeups. The riskier choices are the two-column designs that place skills or dates in a sidebar: some parsers read columns out of order, which can scramble the timeline a recruiter sees. Zety does not label which of its templates are parser-safe, so the burden of checking falls on you.

One more export detail worth knowing: the free .txt download strips every visual element but keeps your text, so it is usable as a raw backup of your writing. If you decide not to pay, download the .txt before your trial ends so you do not lose the content you typed into the wizard.

Cancelling Zety

Zety can be cancelled online through account settings, by live chat, by email, or by phone at 800-985-7561. The online path works but routes you through retention offers, discounts and pauses, before the final confirmation. If you cancel, keep the confirmation email; users on review platforms report disputes that were resolved faster with it. The step-by-step walkthrough is in our guide to cancelling Zety.

Who Zety fits, and who should look elsewhere

Zety is a reasonable choice if you want heavy guidance, plan to use it intensively for a short period, and put a calendar reminder to cancel before the trial converts. The annual plan at $71.40 is also fair value for someone in a long job search who wants the full feature set.

You should look elsewhere if you want a free finished document, since the free plan exports only unformatted text, or if you do not want to manage a cancellation deadline at all. Our list of Zety alternatives covers genuinely free options and fair-billing paid ones, and our Zety vs Resume.io comparison covers the closest paid competitor.

Frequently asked questions

Is Zety legit?
Yes. Zety is a real product operated by BOLD LLC, used by a large number of job seekers, with a functioning editor and support team. The recurring complaints concern its billing model, not fraud: the $1.95 trial converts to $25.95 every four weeks unless cancelled.
How much does Zety really cost per year?
Left running, the recurring plan costs $25.95 every four weeks, which is 13 charges totaling $337.35 per year as of August 2026. The prepaid annual plan costs $71.40. The $1.95 figure is only the 14-day trial.
Why is there a BLD*ZETY.COM charge on my card?
BLD*ZETY.COM is the card statement descriptor Zety uses; BLD refers to BOLD, its parent company. It usually means a Zety trial converted into the recurring $25.95 plan. Log in to your Zety account settings to check and cancel the subscription.
Can I use Zety for free?
You can build and edit a resume for free, but the only free download is an unformatted .txt file. PDF and Word downloads require a paid plan. See Is Zety free? for the full breakdown.
Does Zety refund charges after the trial converts?
Zety handles refunds case by case through support; there is no automatic refund once a renewal posts. Users report the fastest results by contacting support promptly with the charge date and asking explicitly. A cancellation stops future charges but does not by itself refund past ones.
Is Zety ATS-friendly?
Zety's simpler single-column templates generally parse well; heavily designed two-column ones carry the usual extraction risks. Whatever builder you use, verify the output yourself: run the finished PDF through a parser view like our free ATS checker before applying.
