Sales Representative Cover Letter Example

A sales cover letter is a pitch where you're the product, and sales managers read it exactly that way: does it open with numbers, does it qualify the buyer (them), and does it close with a next step? A rep who can't sell themselves in four paragraphs is making an unintended disclosure.

Adapt the example below with your own attainment and deal profile, consistent with your sales representative resume example.

The example letter

Dear Ms. Kaplan,

I'm applying for the Account Executive position on your mid-market team. I've finished at or above quota in 11 of my last 12 quarters — currently 124% against a $900K annual number — selling logistics software into operations and finance buyers on 60-90 day cycles.

Your motion looks like the one I run today: outbound-heavy pipeline generation (I self-source 70% of my pipeline), multi-stakeholder deals averaging $35K ACV, and a Salesforce-and-Outreach stack I've used for four years. Last year I also won back six churned accounts worth $210K by rebuilding relationships the previous rep had burned — the kind of patient, multi-threaded work your posting's 'own the full cycle' line suggests you need.

I'm targeting your company deliberately: I've sold into the 3PL space your product serves, I know the objections your reps hear because I've handled the adjacent ones, and your move upmarket matches where my deal sizes have been trending.

I'd welcome twenty minutes to walk through my numbers and how I'd ramp on your patch. When would be a good time this week?

Best regards,

Devon Carter

Writing tips for Sales Representative cover letters

  • Open with attainment: quota percentage, consistency, and dollar figures in sentence one or two. Sales managers screen on numbers first and read prose second, if at all.
  • Match your deal profile to theirs — cycle length, ACV, buyer persona, inbound vs outbound mix. A great enterprise rep is a risky SMB hire and vice versa; showing you know the difference is itself a signal.
  • Demonstrate research on their market in one specific sentence. Reps sell preparation; a letter that shows none predicts discovery calls that show none.
  • Close like a rep: propose the meeting and suggest a time frame. A passive 'I hope to hear from you' in a sales letter is a red flag in the wrong direction.
  • Keep it under 250 words — brevity is the proof of respect for a buyer's time, and the manager reading is your first buyer.
